Seattle World’s Fair Century 21 Exposition

The Seattle World’s Fair was America’s first “Space-Age World’s Fair” and first international Exposition to be held in the United States in 23 years. The federal government had expended in excess of 9 million dollars for its participation in the world’s fair for a science pavilion, the largest amount ever appropriated for such a purpose, and a total fair cost of over 80 million. The Seattle World’s Fair had also been sanctioned by the Bureau of International Expositions at Paris in November 1960 plus the fact that it was the only world’s fair in the western hemisphere approved for participation by its 30 member nations. It had been said that the Seattle World’s Fair was “The universal hankering for a holiday” with 20 nations of the world displaying the best of their technical predictions in pavilions ringing the beautiful landscaped malls.

The world of science had shaped our civilization to a degree beyond all calculation and was featured in five areas. The science pavilion included: “The Spacearium - Vistas of Space” which presented accurate views of earth, moon, planets, sun and our galaxy; a “Rocket Ride” into space gave visitors a view of these planets as though on a speeding space ship. “A House of Science” was a brief review of the scientist’s daily activity within his working area, suggestive of his attitude and approach. “Development of Science” was devoted to the aspects of nature which have provoked man’s curiosity since the beginning of time. “Methods of Science” gave examples of the scientific work being done at the time. “The Horizons of Science” showed how science can be used by society to enlarge its own horizons.
